Fat contains 9 kcal per gram and carbohydrate contains 4 kcal per gram. Eating more fat means eating more calories which leads to weight gain…..correct? Not that simple. Higher volume, low calorie food like pasta may lead to short term fullness but in the long run, due to its low calorie content, will make you hungrier sooner.

You may think that filling up on large amounts of water prior to a meal or consuming lots of high fibre foods is a good way to loose the excess weight. Both of these have a range of benefits but are not the cure. Your body is not fooled by filling up on these low calorie options.

Eating a high fibre food like pasta triggers a response which releases insulin, a hormone that polices your blood sugar levels. Insulin reduces your blood sugar levels by storing energy in either the liver, muscle cells or fat cells. As insulin does such a great job at reducing your blood sugar levels it is thought that lower blood glucose levels then triggers your hunger response. Leading you to be hungrier sooner from eating pasta than eating something like a steak.

So this week set out to fill up on calorie dense foods (nuts and seeds, oily fish or meat products) and stay fuller for longer rather than trying to fill up on energy poor foods and getting hungrier sooner.
